Keweenaw Vortex

in the Upper Peninsula Michigan, this quaint rural vortex is a great spot to sit if you are crippled or suffer from migraines.  Apparently, the magnetic force generated by the stand of spruces will either make you very ill or cure you.  We were offered a spot to camp on the land of the vortex's two friendly curators (pictured below), but a straaange feeling in my gut (reminding me of how I felt watching the beginning of a Rob Zombie movie) told me to keep-a-moving.

P.S. MY CHRISTMAS WISH

We Have Always Lived in the Castle

I just finished Shirley Jackson's book "We Have Always Lived in the Castle". I think most of her nightmares must involve mobs of backward locals (she wrote "The Lottery", which has never left me since I read it in 5th grade). I dig the sisterly love (not having my own), and the way the characters are sortof evil, but only in regards to circumstances that occurred long before the narration actually begins. I read this entire book Friday night between the hours of 2-5 am while James was sick in the bathroom. IT WAS GREAT.

whenever I feel sad,
sick,
weak,
fearful,
incompetent,
or lonely,
I picture this in my head and know it's going to be ok:

and wouldn't our mommies and daddies be proud at our ability to communicate? at the age of 25, able to pick up a phone and distill our lives into punchlines and stories and miscreant ruin dilapidant daydream wondrland intuitive rambles? half done as I always say, half done with the times and may they drive me out in a loud, old, American car into the cornfields the greenfields the strange old country avenues ofmy half-life 13 year old Iowa nightmare. May the dogs run out the fields, each with a gimp or deformity... may the large furry figure come to rescue me and carry me away.

Best of 2009

So...
James and I compiled a list of the "best of" 2009. I thought it was a pretty good year, but looking down at this list that includes several ways to prepare eggs and one ubiquitous hateful board game, I somehow feel rather silly. I think I better make some plans for this year. We're four months in, and the breaks stopped working on the Taurus, I've started cutting James' hair, we've traded fantasy for the russians and picture books, and MJ is still dead.
